Romans 8: 35 & 37: Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.
This was the verse that hit me last night when I popped open my bible app before bed. Can I just say wow? Haven’t we all wondered these things. Haven’t we all wondered or questioned at times why bad things happen to us, why people persecute us, if he is really with us, and if he loves us?
I will speak for myself and say I most definitely have. More times than I wish to admit really. In fact these very questions and hard times in the past kept me from pursuing a relationship with Christ. I wouldn’t even say that it was that I was necessarily angry with God, it was more like why is this happening to me? Are you really there?
But the world is filled with evil and sin and what I’ve come to understand is that I will never have answers to the why and quite frankly I really don’t need the answers anymore. I’ve learned to stop asking why God and instead have started asking: God guide me through this, see me through this, lead me to the light, show me compassion, and help me to endure. You know what? Despite my circumstances and the bad things I’ve endured, I am still here. I have not been dealt anything that was more than what I could handle, even if it felt like I couldn’t handle it at the time. He has been there with me through it all and he challenges me to see the light in all things and to have faith in him and trust in his plan.
He loves us. He is there with us. But suffering is inevitable; none of us are immune. Take a look at 2 Corinthians 1:5 For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ. It’s true, we may suffer, but he is always there to comfort us.
Finally our suffering is worth it: 2 Corinthians 4: 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all and we can use our suffering and the comfort we receive from God to help others 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.
Suffering, persecution, and whatever troubles you may be facing are temporary. We are victorious through Christ; he is our living hope.
