When You Marry Your Best Friend

If I have any advice about marriage, it is to marry your best friend.

I married my best friend a few months ago and while our marriage is definitely not perfect… as no marriage is…I wouldn’t change a thing.

When you marry your best friend, it is hard to stay mad at each other. We don’t really “fight” very often…but we do disagree and do bicker sometimes. The funny thing is our “bickerments”…yes I just made that word up…don’t last very long because most of the time one of us starts laughing and then the other one laughs and next thing you know our “bickerment” has lost its steam.

When you marry your best friend, you have someone that is always there for you no matter what. There for you when you fall, there to share in your joy, and there to laugh your way through life with.

When you marry your best friend, you can always be yourself. You can run around the house in sweats with no make-up on, and your hair sideways. You can talk in silly ways and silly things that you know will make your spouse laugh. You can sing loudly in the shower and not really care how terrible it sounds (which is something considering my husband is actually really good at singing).

When you marry your best friend, you can enjoy spending time both together and apart. My two best girlfriends from grad school are coming to my house this weekend for a girls weekend and my husband is having a fantasy football draft weekend with his guy friends so he will be gone. As much as we enjoy spending time together, we also enjoy spending time apart and we never worry about what the other one is doing. We are confident in our marriage and have nothing but trust for each other.

We are going on 5 years together now and I think each day we become even better friends. A marriage is many different things but a marriage founded on a friendship will make it through the toughest of times.
